Scientific Sports

About the Issue

Published on

It is with a profound sense of intellectual anticipation that we introduce this most unusual issue of Scientific Sports. A cursory perusal of the ensuing pages will reveal a conspicuous, and indeed unprecedented, lacuna: the absence of our customary selection of peer-reviewed articles. A less discerning observer might, perhaps precipitously, construe this as a fallow period. We, however, the editorial board of this esteemed journal, posit an alternative and, we contend, more perspicacious interpretation.

Rather than viewing this caesura as an indication of inactivity within our scholarly community, we choose to embrace it as a testament to the sheer magnitude and complexity of the research currently being undertaken. It suggests not a dearth of inquiry, but rather a period of deep and protracted intellectual gestation. The kind of paradigm-shifting, methodologically rigorous work to which Scientific Sports has always been dedicated is not, and indeed should not be, a matter of hurried production. It necessitates meticulous data acquisition, painstaking analysis, and the kind of profound contemplation that cannot be beholden to the arbitrary rhythm of publication deadlines. We are, it seems, in a collective moment of scholarly reflection, a shared, silent drawing of the intellectual bow before the next volley of seminal contributions is unleashed.

This journal has never countenanced the quotidian or the derivative; our raison d'être is to provide a platform exclusively for work that genuinely advances the frontiers of our understanding. Ergo, the silence we are currently observing is, in its own way, eloquent. It speaks of a community of researchers so dedicated to the gravity of their respective undertakings that they refuse to offer their work for consideration until it has been honed to a state of unimpeachable excellence. It is a silence pregnant with possibility, resonating with the hum of laboratories, the clatter of keyboards composing intricate methodologies, and the quiet intensity of minds grappling with truly formidable questions.

It therefore behoves us, in this unique issue, to reaffirm our mission. We stand as a bastion for the ambitious, the innovative, and the transformative. We issue a clarion call to those researchers, currently immersed in their laudable and demanding endeavours, to consider Scientific Sports their ultimate destination. This intermission, as it were, serves as a potent opportunity for us all to recalibrate our ambitions and to prepare for a future issue which, we are unequivocally confident, will be all the more enriched by this period of profound and widespread scholarly deliberation.

We await, with bated breath and unshakeable optimism, the imminent and formidable deluge of manuscripts that is sure to follow.
